Here is the second of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Philip R. Hastings that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1955. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6402, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" steam locomotive built in Juniata during 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. It's pulling a long string of empty hopper cars around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. |
