IC 4-4-0 #1901 - Illinois Central
Title:  IC 4-4-0 #1901 - Illinois Central
Description:  Iconic photo at a small town train station at the turn of the century. This plucky locomotive was one of four built by the Illinois Central Paducah Shops in 1888 to serve the growing passenger needs. Specs - class 1901, 69" drivers, 150 psi boiler pressure, engine weight 96,100 lb, tractive effort 14,369 lb. This is definitely a newer photo copy from the original negative. Unknown photographer.

Lake Erie and Western Junction and (Now) Norfolk Southern Main St. Crossing
Title:  Lake Erie and Western Junction and (Now) Norfolk Southern Main St. Crossing
Description:  An old photo of the Tipton Railroad Junction in 1915, where 2 New York Central steam locomotives can be seen, as well as a boardwalk, the IMC division passing through the East-West mainline, and several buildings along Main street. The photo on the bottom was taken June 3, 2010. The only similarities between the photos that can seen are one main track (the sidetrack was removed from this division a long time ago, and the tracks of the IMC division no longer pass through this crossing) and the roof of the station (now operated by the local NS MOW and inspection crew). The only track which still remains here is the mainline, even though 5 tracks originally crossed here. 2 of these tracks were the east-west LE&W Division, 2 being the northwest-southeast LE&W Division (IMC) and the last being the north-south Indiana Railroad interurban track. 1915 photo is courtesy of the Tipton County Heritage Center. EDIT: The Union Traction line turned west a block south of the depot onto Dearborn St. and turned north again at Berryman Pike before crossing the Frankfort District (possibly called the Sandusky Division at the time).

Title:  PRR "Class 'D' Locomotives," Page 45, 1981
Description:  Here is page 45 of a 78-page booklet published by Harry P. Albrecht entitled "Those Amazing Class 'D' Locomotives." It was issued originally in June of 1981. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8527, a D-8A (4-4-0) "American" built by the Dennison Locomotive Works as PC&StL number "62" during 1887, renumbered PCC&StL "X1062" in April of 1902, renumbered PRR "8527" in June of 1904, and retired in November of 1914 after 27 years of faithful service. (5 February 2022: My first use of Mr. Robert Hess's "PRR Numerical Roster ~ Steam & Electric Locomotives.")

Preparing to buffer up
Title:  Preparing to buffer up
Description:  Most of our second day on the line was spent learning how to "buffer up," that is, how to approach the brake van at the appropriate speed and then stop after gently meeting up with the vans buffers. Practicing this operation in full view of the sceptical stationmaster and his staff was nerve-wracking indeed!

Ready and Waiting!
Title:  Ready and Waiting!
Description:  Great Western Railway No. 9017 (sometimes 3217) the 4-4-0 Earl of Berkeley. This class of locomotives was nicknamed "Dukedog" because the GWR cobbled them together from the frames of Bulldog class locos and the boilers of Duke class engines. The resultant locomotives, while occasionally temperamental, served for many years on the GWR.
