The enclosure at platform level behind the locomotive was known as the Northwest Passage. It provided a fully enclosed, carpeted and air-conditioned, passage between the C&NW station and the CTA's Clinton and Lake Streets elevated station. The passage was built in 1970 and closed in 1990.

Description:  7th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, dtring August of 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engine #5706 and two other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by EMD. #5706 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 7th Street Bridge with a long passenger train, and will soon stop at the Altoona Station on their way to Pittsburgh and points West. In the background, a mixed-cargo freight train headed by PRR engine #7140 waits patiently for orders to proceed.
